The Lithuanian government plans to eliminate contraband-carrying balloons, PM warns.
Lithuania will begin to shoot down aerial devices transporting illicit goods from Belarus, government officials confirmed.
This action responds after unauthorized aerial incursions forced Vilnius Airport to close repeatedly in recent days, including at the weekend, with the government also closing frontier checkpoints during these events.
Border checkpoints will now be closed indefinitely in response to the helium weather balloons.
The government leader stated, "we are ready to take even the most severe actions against airspace violations."
National Security Actions
Announcing the actions at a press conference, officials stated defense units were executing "complete operational protocols" to intercept unauthorized devices.
About the border closure, Ruginiene said diplomats will still be able to travel across the international border, while European Union nationals and Lithuanian residents retain entry rights, but no other movement will be allowed.
"In this way, we are sending a signal to foreign authorities declaring that unconventional threats won't be accepted here, and we will take all the strictest measures to halt these operations," government officials declared.
Authorities received no prompt reaction from Minsk officials.
Diplomatic Measures
Lithuania plans to consult its allies over the threat posed from the balloons with possible discussions about implementing the alliance's consultation mechanism - a protocol allowing member state consultation regarding security matters, particularly involving territorial protection - officials noted.
Airport Disruptions
Aviation hubs faced multiple shutdowns during holiday periods from balloon incidents from Belarus, affecting 112 flights and more than 16,500 passengers, per transportation authority data.
During the current month, 25 balloons entered Lithuania from Belarus, resulting in numerous canceled flights and passenger inconveniences, according to emergency management officials.
This situation represents ongoing challenges: by autumn measurements, 544 balloons were recorded entering Lithuania from neighboring territory during current year, per government spokesperson comments, with nearly thousand incidents during previous year.
European Context
Other European airports - covering northern and central European sites - have also been affected by air incursions, involving unmanned aerial vehicles, in recent weeks.
