The FBI director, 45, oversees the nation's top law enforcement agency.

The FBI director directs thirty-seven thousand staff members across fifty-five regional divisions, as well as 350 satellite offices and sixty-plus overseas bases.

He quickly rose inside the former president's inner circle after taking a role as a national security aide in twenty-nineteen, then later in 2020 became chief of staff to the Pentagon leader.

Patel, the son of immigrants from India, is a one-time criminal lawyer and federal prosecutor.

During Senate hearings, the director disputed having a registry of so-called bureaucratic opponents, and minimizing controversial remarks he previously stated, such as labeling law enforcement officials who investigated Trump as "unlawful operatives".

The publication Government Gangsters, published in 2023, he advocated a purge of what he called "state oppression" within the FBI by firing "high-level officials".
