Courageous Rail Staff Member Receives Life-Threatening Injuries Amid Multiple Stabbing Attack on Express Train
A brave train employee who stepped in to protect travelers during a multiple stabbing incident on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Incident
Surveillance video reportedly shows the staff member attempting to halt the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers running through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Response and Consequences
The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five people have since been discharged from medical care.
A witness filmed the individual brandishing a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced police on the platform. He was allegedly heard yelling, "Kill me, end my life."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous employee of rail staff whose family are being assisted by trained officers,” stated a senior law enforcement officer.
Labor Response and Appeals for Measures
Train unions were swift to praise employees and demand more measures. A union official stated he would be “requesting urgent meetings with government, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the strongest available assistance, tools and robust protocols in place”.
A different union leader encouraged the train operator and authorities “to move swiftly to examine security, to support the impacted workers, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Driver Commended for Rapid Thinking
The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“The driver didn’t halt the service in the center of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to reach, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” explained a association official.
Further Details
Authorities said they got the initial emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted at first thinking if the event was a holiday joke, but soon understood from individuals' expressions that it was real.
Police have stated there is nothing to suggest the event was a terror-related attack and have asked the public to provide with any further details.
Rail services on the affected route are expected to have delays until the following day, with passengers advised to postpone their travel where possible.
Individuals with details that could assist the inquiry are encouraged to contact authorities by texting a specific number with a case code.
